KWMU board member resigns

“Friends of KWMU” board member Doreen Dodson had the good sense today to distance herself from Patty Wente, KWMU’s maven of mismanagement.

Keep in mind that while the friends board collects all those checks after pledge drives, it has no real oversight authority. And Wente picks the board members...just like a dictatorship. Those who dare to ask questions usually don't stay long.

Good for Doreen! The Friends Board are a bunch of hobbyists who are kept in the dark by Wente. They have no real authority, but contribute tons of money to the station. And in return, they get to promote their on business or (in a few notable cases) actually become on-air commentators. It's always seemed shady to me.

Who knows what else goes on between them and the she-devil. I always suspect the worse. I'd never serve on her board (and she does view it as being hers)under any circumstances.

Smart move. Id encourage anyone on that board to follow suit if they care about their reputations. This isn't going to look good for anyone who enabled Patricia Wente when it all finally shakes out.

I commend Ms. Dodson for taking a stand for integrity and distancing herself from Patty Wente and the Friends of KWMU board.

The board's annual meeting is next week. Perhaps this would be the forum for remaining board members to ask Wente to explain the auditor's letter and Ostroff?

Does anyone know the following?
1. Is the annual meeting an open event to the public or would it qualify to go into closed door session under Missouri Sunshine Law?
2. Where is the meeting at?
3. What day next week?

Unlike the sneaking out the backdoor of the station when a RFT reporter, wonder what exit or window (she would really do this) if others showed up?? hmmm...

Wednesday, May 16 at the St. Louis Club in Clayton, 6pm. Hope she doesn't duck out a window. The meeting is on the 14th floor. :D

The reference to the next annual board meeting should have been Wednesday May 21 not May 16? Is that correct? Just asking whomever posted that date and time. But thanks for posting it here!! Just wanted to make sure it was May 21 at six pm at the STL Club in Clayton, 14th floor. Can you confirm please??

Thank you for posting the info about the board mtg. I wonder if Elliott Davis or Mike Owens will make an appearance. By chance, do you know the agenda at all?? I'm sure that's top secret per PW.

Statement from UMSL

UNIVERSITY REPLACES GENERAL MANAGER

University of Missouri-St. Louis Chancellor Thomas George today terminated the employment of longtime KWMU (90.7 FM) general manager Patricia Wente. The action followed a review of financial and management issues raised by current and past employees and outside auditors.

“KWMU is a St. Louis treasure,” George said. “This action is being taken to protect that treasure for the university and the community.”

KWMU is a National Public Radio affiliate with a 100,000-watt signal. The station is housed at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and licensed to The Curators of the University of Missouri.

George said that he has asked that KBIA (91.3 FM) General Manager Mike Dunn serve as interim general manager. Dunn has been the general manager of the public radio station on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus for 22 years.

“It is not unique that one UM campus loan expertise during times of transition and I’m thankful to MU for their cooperation,” George said. “I know that our award-winning radio staff here will work well with Mike as he oversees daily operations, as well as continues to review the station’s financial and management policies. We want to ensure that the proper checks and balances are in place to maintain our fiscal integrity and highest standards of professional behavior.”
